Oct. 11th, 2004

I was out to dinner with a friend of mine, K., who is a clinical psych Ph.D.. As we were leaving the hotel we bumped into two other people here for the same meeting, friends of mine from UCSD. One of them is my counterpart on another part of the project, an older fellow I know I've mentioned before. I introduced them to K.--turns out we were all going the same direction to find a restaurant, so we headed out together. We parted ways along the way--we bumped into yet another meeting attendee and stopped to chat--but ended up at the same restaurant. K and I got a table separately since we hadn't seen each other in a long time and wanted to chat freely. (We made eye contact with them after we were seated, since it was not a large restaurant, and just waved and smiled.) K asked me what *their* problems were. I said, huh? and she said that the older fellow came across as really unfriendly and arrogant. I said nah, he's just really really *really* reserved and doesn't open up much. She obviously didn't believe me but the conversation moved on to other things.

But at the end of dinner he came over to our table and asked if we felt safe to walk back alone or if they should wait for us, which we both thought was just the sweetest gesture! I said thank you so much, that's very kind but we'll be fine, catch you at the meeting tomorrow, we swapped smiles and some trivialities about the meeting, and they headed out. I turned back to K and she was looking a little stunned at such a gentlemanly gesture. That was not a side of him she'd seen before or imagined he could have, that he could be so considerate or caring. I just had to laugh--I said, "You don't hang out with geeks much, do you?" She admitted that no, she usually hung out with the wild things, and they read a little differently. :)

Hee hee hee. The look on her face was priceless. I'm always amazed by people who read people so quickly; I always have to reserve judgement because I miss so many clues that it takes me time to really see what someone is like. But it's fun when someone who is used to reading all the clues right the first time sometimes gets it wrong. ::snicker::
